UW Health and UnityPoint Health-Meriter Launch Fetal Treatment Center

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin’s only fetal diagnosis and treatment center was launched by UW Health and UnityPoint Health-Meriter.

In Wisconsin, approximately 2,000 infants are born with a defect each year, affecting 3% of all births.

The Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center will bring together specialist care in many areas, offering diagnosis and counseling, as well as surgery before or after the baby is born. With the new center, mothers will no longer need to stay in the hospital or travel out of state if their baby needs surgery after birth.

“We are so excited to be able to provide this kind of access to care for families in our community,” said Dr. Inna Lobeck of UW Health.

The center manages a wide range of conditions and doctors at the center can now perform surgeries on babies still in the womb, which they say was not possible 20 or 30 years ago.

“We are able to offer hope where there was none before,” Dr Lobeck said.
