Teeth whitening at Beambar is my new go-to procedure for a bright smile

Permanent appointment is our review series that examines the best new and notable cosmetic procedures in the field of aesthetics and determines if they are worth trying for yourself. This week, our editor is testing express teeth whitening treatments at New York’s new Beambar.

A bright smile has always attracted me. It shows me that the person puts their well-being and oral health first, and looks great in the photos. Unfortunately, due to the high price of teeth whitening services and the healthcare system in this country, I haven’t always had professional access to getting those pearly whites. And sure, an at-home oral routine can improve the appearance of stains, but to remove intrinsic and extrinsic stains (more on the difference later), expert whitening is needed.

That’s why I was so excited when beam bar, a new Manhattan-based express teeth whitening company, invited me in for a free treatment. Frustrated by the exorbitant prices offered by dentists for this treatment, former Columbia Business students Aditya Jain, Rashi Gupta and Fabienne van Buchem founded Beambar to create a better and more affordable solution. Their goal was to create something that was safe, enjoyable, and more effective than home whitening products.

Hoping to get the signs of my excess wine and coffee out of my teeth, I practically ran to my appointment to see how Beambar could help me. Ahead, my step-by-step journey through the appointment: the procedure itself, its cost, and the aftercare routine. (Spoiler alert: prepare to be surprised, because the treatment is good.)

What makes Beambar different from traditional teeth whitening?

Unlike every dental office I’ve been to with sterile smells, intimidating tools, and uncomfortable chairs, Beambar’s spa ambience is instantly soothing. From the bright blue and white color scheme to the pod-shaped chairs, the studio has been able to create a non-threatening environment that welcomes teeth whitening newbies like me. “Beambar offers affordable, high-quality cosmetic teeth whitening for just $129,” Buchem told TZR. “Customers can watch Netflix in a spa-like setting, enjoy a complimentary lip scrub, and step out with a dazzling smile in less than an hour.” As soon as you walk in, the staff greets you with beaming smiles and walks you through the five-step, 45-minute process from start to finish.

Aside from the atmosphere, the price is a huge draw for clients and a significant difference from in-office whitening. “Patients have always complained to me about the price [of teeth whitening]“, Gupta shared. “There were a lot of obstacles [mainly finances] patients had to go through hardships that I couldn’t do much about as a dentist. Beambar is therefore the solution to remove many of these obstacles. »

Where formal and more traditional teeth whitening services involve a lot of pain and take a lot of time, Beambar services are able to produce the same high quality results painlessly and in less time. “Beambar uses 16% hydrogen peroxide, while dental offices use a higher concentration (25%) of bleach,” Buchem continues. “Hydrogen peroxide is very fast acting, but our lower concentration means clients face less sensitivity or ‘zingers’ in their teeth after treatment, but still walk away with noticeably whiter smiles after all three sessions. 15 minutes.”

What happens during a Beambar appointment?

The one-hour appointment includes some of the logistics, dental history recording, and the three aforementioned sessions. Upon entering the facility, you are asked to complete a health questionnaire in which you will answer basic medical and health questions to ensure that you are eligible for laundering. Then you walk to the brushing station and hand over a toothbrush and Better and better vegan toothpaste. A sugar lip scrub is then applied to the lips to keep them smooth and hydrated throughout the treatment.

Then the fun part: three-step whitening in your own private bubble. Employees will place a retractor in your mouth to hold it open and prime the teeth for gel and LED light. A vitamin E oil is applied to the gums to prevent sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide gel. Then you apply the whitening gel yourself from your own personal vile, making sure to go gently over each tooth.

You repeat this process three times in 15 minute increments while watching your favorite Netflix show on a personal iPad. The service is not the least bit uncomfortable. It’s actually relaxing, as you sit back and watch a TV series or a movie. After the 45 minute process, a remineralizing gel is applied to the teeth to reduce any sensitivity. “Because whitening gel temporarily dehydrates teeth, our remineralizing gel is used to rehydrate and seal in the whitening,” Buchen explains. Then you choose between mint, watermelon or aloe vera mouthwash to come out with fresh breath. Once the whitening is totally complete, the team provides you with a care kit including dietary instructions for the next 24 hours, a lip mask and vitamin E oil to soothe the gums.

My sparkling results with BeamBar

First of all, it is important to understand that there are two types of stains: intrinsic (enamel stains) and extrinsic (surface stains). Intrinsic stains occur inside the tooth, in the enamel or dentin, and can occur through genetics, aging, or other issues. To remove them, you can go to your dentist for a professional cleaning or use bleaching agents like carbamide or hydrogen peroxide. On the other hand, extrinsic stains occur on the surface of the tooth and usually form from pigmented foods, drinks and tobacco, getting worse over time if left untreated. After the first two 15 minute sessions of my treatment, I noticed surprisingly whiter teeth, especially in my two front teeth which bear the brunt of my coffee addiction. “The teeth whitening gel penetrates the dentin layer of the tooth and lifts the stains to the surface so they can be wiped away,” Buchem told TZR.

I was amazed by my sparkling white teeth and delighted that I felt no pain during or after the treatment. Now my tongue rolls over my teeth seamlessly with no extra layers of gunk or stains to stop it. I believe my results are attributed to the whitening gel and the careful aftercare instructions provided by the team. Beambar recommends not eating for two hours to allow the treatment to fully take place. I followed the all-white diet (avoiding staining of drinks and foods such as tomato sauce, matcha tea, wine, and black coffee) that they called for for the first 24 hours, and I resumed eating normal foods without pain the next day. The whole process took an hour and felt completely luxurious. To experience such high-level results in a relaxing environment for the incredible price of $129, I really have no complaints.

I’m happy to say that almost four weeks later, I’m still getting compliments every day for my dazzling smile – the best accessory in all my outfits. Depending on diet, drink consumption and brushing routine, each treatment usually lasts three months. In November, the company plans to launch a subscription service for $99 per month, allowing customers to show up once a month for teeth whitening, continuing their goal of making high-quality teeth whitening more accessible. .
