Matt Chandler, senior pastor of The Village Church in Flower Mound, announced during the Sunday service that he had been placed on temporary leave due to an online relationship he had with a woman.
Chandler only spoke for a few minutes Sunday to explain to the congregation what happened. He said he had conversations via Instagram direct messages with a woman – with the knowledge of both of their spouses – and although he said ‘there was nothing romantic or sexual’ about the messages , Chandler described their conversations as “reckless and reckless,” and the “frequency and familiarity” of the messages were concerning to others. The conversations included “crass and stupid jokes that don’t sit well with someone in my position as senior pastor.” I’m held to a higher standard, and I haven’t reached that standard.
Chandler said he showed the messages to the elders of the church, and “they decided to put me on leave from now on from preaching and teaching at the village church.” Other pastors within the church will replace Chandler during the indefinite period of his departure. Chandler said he plans to remain the Village’s senior pastor for a long time.
