A total of 3,200 principals from public and government-funded primary schools will attend a one-year Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course to be held at the teacher training college (TTC) closest to their district.
The training will be delivered as part of the partnership between the Ministry of Education, the Council of Basic Education of Rwanda, the University of Rwanda, the College of Education (UR-CE) and Building Learning Foundations ( BLF).
The CPD certification course was launched on Friday July 2nd.
Alphonse Uworwabayeho, Head of CPD at UR-CE, said the learning course will be delivered through virtual and face-to-face sessions and that school principals will access their learning materials through the Moodle system of the University of Rwanda using their computers or smart phones.
“This is a great opportunity for Rwandan school principals to learn and improve the way they run their schools, teachers will be offered activities based on the curriculum, share their experiences with each other and with their tutors. , and at the end of the course, they will receive a prize. certificates from the University of Rwanda, ”he added.
Jean Pierre Mugiraneza, head of learning leadership at BLF, said the organization provided each school principal with a smartphone and internet connection to use during the course.
The course is the third of three stages of the CPD program which has been developed to provide all school leaders with the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to foster school improvement in their own schools, while supporting improved learning in all schools, including other schools.
“Sometimes you find that the same schools in the same area operate differently, some very well and some very poor, we want these principals from different schools to share, interact and help each other through this program so that no school is left behind, but all schools thrive together.
“We focused on them because primary school is the basis for learning; we want to give these school leaders a solid foundation to improve their primary schools, which in turn will benefit students at an early stage, ”he said.
Scolastique Uwineza, the director of Groupe Scolaire Nemba in Gakenke district, who completed a recent stage of the CPD program and who will help others in this new program, said she had learned to focus on how teachers, assess, teach and monitor students.
“As a principal, I used to focus on other things like general management and other logistics of the school and ignore the important thing of teaching and helping my students. teachers to keep up with the students, but now we do general assessment and monitoring of students’ regularly, help those who do poorly and make sure those who are at the top do not drop, and it has really improved my overall performance. school, ”she said
“Learning is a continuous process; I think this new program will help me a lot like the previous one, and teach me a lot of things, I will share all the advice I have learned with my fellow teachers because the students are our priority and we always want to learn new things therefore we can better improve their learning process, ”Uwineza added.
Since 2018, Building Learning Foundations, in collaboration with UR-CE and REB, has organized and delivered a CPD certification course to 473 principals known as Learning Leaders and a CPD degree course for 122 leaders of the apprenticeship system in 2020. All of these courses have been completed. .
