Kollam: The central government has ordered the savings bank account to be compulsory for SC students above class X to enjoy educational benefits. An order has been issued to convert zero balance accounts to savings accounts. With this, thousands of students will have to switch to minimum balance accounts.
It’s unclear how the change would affect students who depend on the scholarship and other benefits. There are also fears that the change will impact monetary transactions. Currently, SC students’ special and examination fees are credited to the school’s bank account. The principal withdraws the amount and remits it to the Treasury.
As part of the implementation of the ‘Post Matric Scholarship Scheme’, it has been decided to transfer all the benefits, including the fees of the students of the planned caste, to their account. Also, the SC student e-scholarship profile should be cross-checked to verify bank account number and IFSC code. It is also expected that the information will be corrected.
The mobile phone number used by the students must be added to the profile. In addition, the authorities must ensure that the student’s bank account is not limited.
Educational benefits will be credited to students’ accounts from the 2021-22 academic year. It is also suggested that no fees will be charged to students in advance for any reason.
