A prize and trophy of £5,000 is awarded annually to an outstanding department that demonstrates the philosophy and values ​​of PTI through its work within and beyond the programme.

Richard Jagger, Head of Mathematics Program at Leeds West Academy, said: “The Mathematics Department at Leeds West Academy has been working to develop and implement a very ambitious program which, over the past three years has seen math achievement and student engagement continue to grow.

“The PTI has provided invaluable support and guidance to the entire department, providing fantastic CPD in Mathematics as well as thought-provoking sessions with like-minded leaders.”

Leeds West School’s Mathematics Department was named the winner for its outstanding leadership and impressive subject matter expertise.

Pupils have developed an enthusiasm for maths, which has led to a significant increase in the number of students taking higher level GCSE maths and better achievement in exams.

The passion and energy of the department led a significant number of students to participate in the voluntary Saturday math sessions.

Carolyn Roberts, Co-Director of PTI, said: “PTI is delighted to announce that the Mathematics Department at Leeds West School has won the respected Bernice McCabe Prize.

“Schools across the country have tirelessly supported their students during the pandemic by ensuring they received the highest standard of subject instruction from start to finish.”

The judges were particularly impressed by the confidence in the subject and the enthusiasm of the students of all abilities, a direct consequence of the quality of teaching and the commitment of the school staff.

Students said, “Teachers helped me see that I understand and love math. They achieve the perfect balance of independence and support and the Saturday sessions don’t feel like work.”
