The Kansas City Chiefs lose linebacker coach Matt House to Louisiana State University, where he will become the defensive coordinator of head coach Brian Kelly’s new staff.
House, currently in his third year with the Chiefs, is returning to college after spending three years with the University of Kentucky from 2016 to 2018, including two years as UK defensive coordinator.
According to LSU’s announcement, House “will begin his duties with LSU, including recruiting, once the NFL season is over. “
House expressed his enthusiasm for his new role in a statement on lsusports.net, where he also thanked the Chiefs’ organization for their time in Kansas City and reiterated that “it’s not over yet and we will end this season strong with the Chiefs.”
“It is an honor to join the Coach Kelly staff at LSU,” said House. “I strongly believe in Coach Kelly’s vision and can’t wait to get to work. I have no doubts that there are many exciting times ahead for the Tiger football family. Our staff will work tirelessly to develop our young men on and off the field as we set a championship standard – We will develop real relationships with our players, staff and the great people of the State of Louisiana!
“Also, I want to thank the Kansas City Chiefs organization. Specifically, Chiefs President and CEO Mr. Hunt, Coach Reid and Coach Spagnuolo for all of their support and the past memorable years we have had together. The organization of the leaders exemplifies the class in every way. Coach Reid is a Hall of Fame member for many reasons, and I cannot thank him enough for such an incredible experience. I leave behind so many special people in Kansas City who will be lifelong friends. It’s not over yet and we’ll end this season strong with the Chiefs. My wife, Jessi, our family and I are looking forward to joining the LSU family soon, and we are grateful for this opportunity – Geaux Tigers!
Chief Safety Officer and LSU alumnus Tyrann Mathieu tweeted his support for House and excitement on behalf of the Tigers.
I’m excited for Coach House and the entire Tiger Nation! This man loves soccer and teaching! One of the best I have experienced. This tiger defense will be well coached from day one! Let’s all buy !!! LSU FOREVER!
House oversaw the development of second-year linebacker Willie Gay Jr. and rookie linebacker Nick Bolton, a pair of second-round picks who took on bigger roles as the 2021 season progressed.
In addition to House, linebackers are also coached by outside linebacker coach Ken Flajole, who is in his first year with the Chiefs. As his profile on Chiefs.com indicates, “Flajole has coached all defensive positions in his 43-year coaching career.”
