FSU football: message from Mike Norvell after the 0-4 start

At the Florida State Seminoles weekly football press conference on Monday, head coach Mike Norvell was asked about his message to rookies following the team’s 0-4 start.

The following is his transcribed response, with a video of the response below (and will be updated with a higher quality video.)

The [recruits] watch the matches too. they see the opportunities, the opportunities for themselves … and they believe in who they are and that’s what i want to be around.

There have been a lot of changes in this program over the past few years, and it affects everything. It affects recruiting, it affects the guys who have to come to work every day when there is a change in the standard of operations, when there is a change in the way you do things, when there is a change in what you are looking for, people’s priorities.

Well, these guys, when you lay out the vision for what you want, you live it everyday … the best scouts we have here are the players. Because they are the ones who talk about what it is day after day. How our coaches care about our players, how our coaches invest, the emphasis on teaching the fundamentals, the emphasis on giving playmakers the opportunity to make plays.

But we have to go out there and we have to do a better job in each of these areas. But I’m looking for guys who also want to be a part of this process. Guys who want to be successful, who want to be challenged guys who are ready to stand up and do something that you know, they’re going to have to stand up for that “why are you going why out there?” because it is the best solution for them.

It’s an opportunity where they’re going to be pushed, they’re going to grow, they’re going to have the opportunity to play there, you know, one of the best places in the country, with a wonderful fan base that cares.

I mean, look, I’m pissed that we’re 0-4, no, and we can talk about how many years it’s been, I’m not really giving .. I mean, it’s not I can’t control that . I can control this team right now and now with the opportunity. So we are going to work our buttocks to get better. And we’re going to do it the right way. And we’re going to have a standard on how we operate, it’s going to be the same standard that we’re going to ask him to do in class the same standard as everything we do.

I stick to it because I have to be the example. you know, what does that mean? I will not be wrong, I will probably be wrong. You might do one today, you might do one tomorrow. That’s, it’s okay, I’ll answer that. And so this is the team that I want. Because I saw it work. I’ve been on teams that you know what, they’ve had a losing streak. They weren’t trapped in all the bullshit that was out there and everybody was telling you what you can’t do and oh that’s the problem and it is, yeah, it is easy to point out but who wants to be a part of the solution?

And I have these guys here. I have these guys in the locker room right now. Because it’s really easy when it’s 31-7, can’t you feel it? I mean, if I was a fan I would be pissed off on 7/31. Some of them stayed, some didn’t. But those who could see could see a team that responded, that played to the end. Was it a success? No, it was a failure. We didn’t win this game. We failed – but they didn’t stop. They continued to believe. And for the guys we recruit, for the coaches who are in this staff, for the players who are in this team, that’s what I want. Because if you have that, you might get your butt upside down, but you’re going to react the right way.

Yes, we are 0-4. but we have today. and Lord willin, we wake up tomorrow, we have tomorrow. What we do with it, I have a lot of self-confidence.
