JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Basic Education has said it believes that vaccinating teachers will start the process of normalizing schooling and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on learning and teaching.

The sector is preparing for its vaccination campaign, which will start Wednesday in most of the country’s provinces, targeting 582,000 teachers and support staff over the next two weeks.

The department urged teachers to ignore calls to stay away amid fears of the third wave that has befallen the country.

From Wednesday, the first group of teachers will be vaccinated across the country at more than 200 vaccination sites that have been set up, bringing some hope to the sector which has been one of the hardest hit by COVID-19.

In Gauteng, the vaccination program targets more than 125,000 employees.

Steve Mabona from the Gauteng Department of Education: “This will take place at approximately 46 vaccination sites in the Gauteng regions.

Meanwhile, Elijah Mhlanga from the Department of Basic Education stressed that although vaccinations were not mandatory, the sector had to work hard to ensure that as many people as possible receive the vaccine.

“Please stay close to your school district offices, as there will be a communication coming up,” Mhlanga said.

Following calls from the Union of South African Educators for the temporary closure of schools in the midst of the third wave, the department encouraged teachers to continue reporting for work, saying it would help put successful implementation of the immunization program.
