Many children as well as adults find it difficult to achieve their educational goals and may be looking for alternatives and outside help. Achieve Plant City is a non-profit organization started by a dropout who changed her own life through education and donates it to help others achieve their educational goals. The organization has been providing services in Eastern Hillsborough County since 2011 with support from the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
âAchieve Plant City was created to help others achieve their dreams through education,â said Founder and Executive Director Angelica Ibarra. âI have personally seen the transformation in my life and the lives of my children once I started to acquire knowledge and after realizing the importance of literacy and education. “
The philosophy of the organization is that through education and support, all individuals can reach their potential. One of the most important programs offered is Adult Literacy, which includes English for Speakers of Other Languages ââ(ESOL) courses, Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses, development courses. general education (GED) and basic computer courses.
Achieve Plant City also offers literacy programs for children, which include early childhood education for children aged 18 months to 5 years old and reading and homework help for children in Kindergarten to Grade 5. year. This also includes parenting education with workshops focused on supporting parents in their role as teachers of their child and topics that strengthen the family unit.
Parents and children work together on literacy activities and parents learn strategies to support literacy that they can strengthen at home. Before COVID-19, Achieve Plant City served up to 100 people each year.
âFamilies who participate in our program are signing up because they want a better life,â Ibarra said. âThey want to be able to communicate with others and be involved in the education of their children. They are hard-working people who seek to improve themselves through literacy and need extra support to achieve their goals.
Achieve Plant City is in need of volunteers for the after-school program and the adult literacy program, and it also always welcomes donations that can help with school supplies and tutoring fees. It is located at 202 W. Reynolds St. in Plant City.
