Attention, future scientists! DOST now opens applications for 2021 JLSS – Manila Bulletin


The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) announced on Sunday August 22 that it is opening applications for its 2021 Junior Level Science Fellowship (JLSS) program.

DOST-SEI made the announcement in a Facebook post on Sunday.

“DOST-SEI is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2021 Junior Level Science Fellowships (JLSS),” he wrote on Facebook.

He noted that the electronic scholarship application system had not yet been activated.

The Institute said the system could be used “in a few days”. “But, in the meantime, you will need to prepare several documents before you start filing your electronic application.”

While the start of the online application period has yet to be announced, the last day for online application and uploading of requirements is October 29, 2021.

Who can apply?

The PSHS said applicants must be regular third-year students enrolled in a priority S&T course at identified universities as of the first semester of the 2021-2022 academic year, and meet the following conditions:

-Must have an overall grade point average of at least 83 percent or its equivalent and without any conditional or failing grade during the first two years of college studies, including during mid-year, if is registered;

-Must be a Filipino citizen by birth;

-Must be of good character and in good health; and

-May have already passed the DOST-SEI scholarship exam but failed or qualified for the DOST-SEI undergraduate scholarship but did not benefit from the scholarship.

“The JLSS program aims to provide scholarships that will fund the training of talented and deserving third-year college students who pursue degree programs in science and technology; and ensure a constant and adequate supply of skilled S&T human resources who can steer the country towards national progress, ”said DOST-SEI.

JLSS scholarships

Within the framework of the JLSS, three types of scholarships are offered. These are scholarships in science and technology provided for by Republic Law No. 7687 or the “Law on Scholarships in Science and Technology 1994”; Accelerated Scholarship for Science and Technology in accordance with RA No. 10612 or the “Accelerated Scholarships for Science and Technology Act 2013”; and the MERIT Fellowship or the National Science and Technology Authority (NSTA) Fellowship under RA No. 2067 or the “Science Act of 1958”.

The NSTA scholarship is awarded to students with strong science and math skills who wish to pursue a career in science and technology.

“The Merit and RA 7687 scholarship programs both aim to produce more Filipino scientists and engineers to support knowledge creation and economic productivity in the country. Fellows of these programs are required to work in their areas of specialization in the country for a period equivalent to the duration of the fellowship coverage, ”said DOST-SEI.

“RA 10612, on the other hand, provides for competent science and math teachers in high schools through the hiring of graduates of this program by the Department of Education (DepEd), in support of the law. on reinforced basic education of 2013 (RA 10533) or the K to 12 law ”, he added.
