BOONE, NC – US News & World Report, The Princeton Review and Forbes Magazine have all confirmed what many mountaineers consider to be true – Appalachian State University is one of the best institutions of higher education in the country.
The three national publications recently recognized App State for its academics, innovation, benefits for veteran students, programs to enhance the freshman experience, and other aspects, naming the university on the following lists for 2021 and 2022:
- Ranking of “Best Colleges” for 2022 – US News & World Report.
- “Top 387 Colleges” and “Top Colleges: Region by Region” rankings for 2022 – The Princeton Review.
- America’s Top Colleges ranking for 2021 – Forbes magazine.

App State one of the “best colleges” for 2022 – US News & World Report
App State again scored high in US News & World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” ranking, released on September 13.
For the second year in a row, App State tops the list of Most Innovative Schools among Southern Universities, identified as # 1 by top college officials for making innovative improvements to curricula, faculty, students. , campus life, technology or facilities.
App State also moved up to second place in the Southern University Rankings in the Best Colleges for Veterans category, up one spot from last year, and secured second place among Southern universities in the Undergraduate education category.
For 2022, the university also held its ranking for the third consecutive year in two categories: third in the best public schools in the South and sixth in the best regional universities in the South.
In other US News accolades, App State has fallen into the following categories:
- # 13 in the Learning Communities category.
- N ° 22 among regional universities in the South in the Best Value category.
- No. 28 for first year experiments.
US News collected data from more than 1,850 institutions and used 17 measures, including graduation and retention rates, to measure the academic quality of schools, with the highest emphasis on outcomes.
Since US News’ “Best Colleges” rankings were first published each year, starting in 1987, App State has consistently ranked among the top 15 public and private universities in the South.
App State Among “Best” in US and Southeast for 2022 – The Princeton Review
App State was recognized as one of “387 Best Colleges” in the United States by The Princeton Review for 2022. Additionally, the publication ranked the university among the 143 Best Schools in the Southeast for 2022 – part of its “Top Colleges: Region by Region” website feature. The institutions included in the two lists, published on August 31, were not ranked.
“It’s easy for Appalachian State University to attract undergraduate students. Not only is the school “exceedingly affordable”, but it offers “beautiful scenery” and “a strong sense of community which makes all of its students feel like they have found their place,” “The Princeton Review wrote in its online profile on App State, citing student reviews.
The profile also highlighted App State’s class size, which “allows for a more personal learning experience” according to students surveyed, as well as the university’s Honors College, textbook rental program, students’ passion for sustainability and a wide variety of outdoor programs. The university’s student-faculty ratio is 16: 1.
The Princeton Review selected schools primarily for the excellence of their academic programs. Second, the editors took into account what students attending schools told them about their experiences on campus during a student survey for this project.
App State also has the distinction of being one of 416 national and international colleges and universities named in The Princeton Review 2021’s “Guide to Green Colleges”, published in October 2020. Back after a pandemic hiatus in 2020, Forbes’ “Best Colleges in America” ranking list, announced on September 8. App State is one of 600 public and private schools on the list and ranked in the top 10 private and public schools in North Carolina included.
Additionally, App State was recognized as one of the Southern Top 100 Schools on the list.
Forbes considered seven metrics to determine the ranking: alumni salaries; student loan debt; return on investment; graduation rate; retention rate; school success; and the number of graduates produced by schools who are named to designated lists of successful leaders in public service, business, the arts and athletics.
“Public universities can offer the most exceptional education to the widest range of students at the most affordable price,” the publication writes.
